What is a Charter School?
A charter school is a publicly funded school managed by a private organization. The Miami Children’s Museum Charter School is a Miami-Dade public school.
What makes Miami Children’s Museum Charter School (MCMCS) different from a regular public school?
There are numerous characteristics that make us different from a regular public school. Each day, students at the school will have the opportunity to take advantage of all the resources of the Miami Children’s Museum. The students will be taught using an innovative curriculum that focuses on the museum’s themes of art, culture, community and communication. Additionally, the school offers an innovative Language Program for native and non-native Spanish speakers. Eligible students may also participate in our Young Explorers Gifted Program.
What is the school’s curriculum?
As a public school, the MCM Charter School is subject to the Florida Standards Assessment Test (FSA). The school, therefore, uses the same curriculum objectives as other public schools (i.e. The Florida Standards and The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards). However, the school uses a different approach from most schools to meet the student’s learning objectives. Utilizing the museum’s exhibits, programs and staff, students will be involved in creative, project based learning projects.
How are students accepted to the school?
As a public school, MCM Charter School opens its doors to all students from Miami-Dade County regardless of residence. If more students apply than there is room to accommodate, all applicants for that grade level will be pooled into a lottery. The Board of MCM Charter School then randomly selects the students who will attend the school.
How can I enroll my child in the Young Explorers Gifted Program?
A student can be referred to participate in the Gifted Program by either their teacher or parent. If you would like more information, please e-mail our Gifted Teacher, Ms. Nadia, at email@example.com.
How do I apply for my child to attend the school?
You may download the application from our website and return it to the front office or contact the school registrar at 305-329-3758 for an application. All supporting documentation must be attached to the application before delivering to the front office.
What is the school’s schedule?
MCM Charter School adheres to the same schedule as Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The official calendar will be distributed to all students and parents. The school’s daily schedule is from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm for grades K-5, except on Wednesdays students will be released at 2:00pm.
Are the teachers certified?
Yes. All of MCM Charter School teachers adhere to the same certification guidelines as public school teachers.
Are there any parent requirements at MCMCS?
Each family at MCM Charter School is required to complete 30 volunteer hours each school year. Each teacher determines how the hours can be completed in his/her classroom or from home. Additionally, school staff will have frequent communication with parents. Students’ families will also be encouraged to participate in numerous events and activities throughout the school year.
Is there a school uniform policy?
Yes. Students are required to wear uniforms daily. The uniform requirements can be found on the website under the About tab and on the application.
What options are there for lunch?
Students may either purchase lunch from the Subway restaurant located in the museum or bring lunch from home. As a public school, the school participates in the National School Lunch Program. Students may apply for either free or reduced lunch. The Subway menu and order form can be found under the Student Life tab.
